Walking aids provide support for an individual who has difficulty walking over distances. for those who have difficulty with maintaining stability when walking, and to support mobility.

Walking aids can increase the user’s stability and balance to support their confidence when walking independently, and can be used on a short-term basis (i.e. following surgery) or for long-term use (i.e. permanent medical condition).

There are a range of walking aids designed to assist a person who is having difficulty walking both short and long distances. At Emprise Mobility we stock a large variety of walking aids, from walking sticks to seat walkers, and in many sizes to suit individuals. Consideration for Selecting Walking Aids Products & Accessories

There are a number of considerations that apply:

Safe Working Load

Our range of walking aids have different load capacities depending on the model; therefore it is important to always select a product with a safe working load at or above the maximum weight you expect it to carry.

Type

When selecting a walking aid it is important to firstly consider the individual’s needs and how the walking aid will be used, to determine the most suitable type of walking aid. Our range of walking aid types range from walking sticks, seat walkers, forearm walkers, crutches, and walking frames.

Other considerations relate to your specific needs and the environment in which the product will be used:

  • Consider the environment in which the product will be used – different models of walking aids are designed to be used indoors, outdoors, or both. It is also important to consider if the walking aid will fit through doorways and be sturdy enough for different terrain.
  • What level of support does the person need? For those requiring occasional or mild levels of support, a walking stick may be sufficient; however those with significant difficulties may require a walking frame or seat walker.
  • Does the person want to or need to sit to take breaks when walking? As the name suggests, seat walkers have a seat for taking breaks for those who may fatigue or experience discomfort during distance mobility outings.
  • Is the aid going to be used as part of a rehabilitation program (e.g. post surgery) or will it be on a permanent basis?
  • Transportation- If the walking aid needs to be transported in a vehicle for use in multiple environments, consider if the user or their companion safely lift the product into the car? Does the product fold to make transporting easier? Consider the weight of the product.
  • How much upper strength does the user have? Some walking aids will require the user to lift them or carry some of their body weight through their arms and shoulders. This will help indicate which walking aid would be better suited to them.
  • Consider the functional need of the aid and if the walking aid needs to be multifunctional e.g. is a walking aid required to support stability when walking and support seated rest breaks? If yes, then a seat walker or 2-in-1 seat walker wheelchair may be a suitable option.
