Equipment used for toileting can increase the level of safety and enable independence in the toilet by providing support for the user. They can assist when an individual has difficulty with mobility, balance, and/or coordination concerns. These toileting products are predominantly used in the toilet, although some can also be used in the bedroom/other areas of the house when necessary.

At Emprise Mobility our toileting aids range from small to large, portable to fixed, and various options to suit all levels of user needs. Our range of toileting products are available to view in our showrooms and can also be arranged for trial within the home to ensure suitability for the space and user.

These products are suitable for those who:

Have difficulty getting on and off the toilet.
Those who have difficulty accessing the toilet.
Users who have increased urgency and/or continence concerns.
Those who have reduced strength to lift themself from the toilet.
Those with reduced lower limb mobility, reduced strength in their legs, or difficulty/inability to walk and stand.
Users at high risk of falls.
Individuals recovering from surgery or injury whereby their lower limb mobility is reduced.

There are a number of considerations that apply:

Safe Working Load

Our range of toileting products have different load capacities depending on the model; therefore it is important to always select a product with a safe working load at or above the maximum weight you expect it to carry.

Sizing

Our range of toileting products are available in a range of sizes, including varied seat widths and heights. It is important that the user’s needs including their body size and bathroom size are considered when selecting a suitable option.

Material

These products are often used in wet areas. The main options for material are powder coated stainless steel, aluminium and plastic. Aluminium is lighter than stainless steel and will not rust but it is the more expensive option. Some have the option for a padded seat/backrest, which may be more comfortable for those with pressure/sensation concerns. An over toilet frame, padded toilet seat raiser and shower commode are available with padded seats if this is a desired feature.

Other considerations relate to your specific needs and the environment in which the product will be used:

Is the toilet too low? A toilet seat raiser or over toilet frame may be a suitable option.
Will the person need to be wheeled into and out of the toilet? If yes, they will need to select a shower commode (they are also used over toilets).
Does the individual have difficulty getting on and off the toilet? If yes, an over toilet frame or toilet surround would be appropriate.
Does the individual have increased urgency/continence concerns? If yes, urinal bottles and bedside commodes may be a suitable option to consider.
Does the individual have difficulty reaching to wipe and maintain hygiene after toileting? If yes, smaller grooming aids such as long handle bottom wipers may be suitable.
Does the individual have use of both arms? If one side is weaker, consider a product which secures onto the toilet such as toilet seat raisers or toilet support arms.
Consider the environment of the toilet – in cramped spaces, products that can secure onto the toilet or wall may be a better option and take up less space. On the other hand, freestanding equipment may be more suitable for those who are unable to complete home modifications (for example, those who may be renting).
