Mobility scooters are electric wheeled mobility devices and pedestrian vehicles that can assist users who have reduced mobility with distance mobility and community access (e.g. users who no longer drive but need to access the community).

They are low speed mobility vehicles (limited to a maximum 10kph in Australia) and the rider is considered a pedestrian, therefore pedestrian road rules apply when operating it.

They come in different sizes and configurations with models available that are suitable to be ridden indoors or outdoors on footpaths (or the road when a footpath is not available), within shopping centres and residential facilities. Our range of scooters are also available with accessories to suit individual needs, including phone holders, shade cover, carry bags, and walking aid carriers. These products can be used on a short-term basis (e.g. following surgery) or for long-term use (e.g. permanent condition).

We carry two brands of scooter – Merits and Shoprider. Both brands are highly reputable and produce good quality scooters. We service and maintain both brands in our in-house Service Centre and are authorised warranty providers for both.

As mobility scooters are an electric mobility device, they are considered a complex product due to the safety considerations to operate a scooter. It is therefore very important to consider the needs of the individual and their functional ability to determine if a mobility scooter is a suitable option for the individual. We recommend seeking support from a qualified health professional to support your decision.

These products are suitable for those who:

  • Users with limited mobility who are unable to or do not wish to drive a vehicle but wish to access their local community and who are completing short trips (round trip of 30km or less).
  • Individuals who find walking any distance (even within their own home or residential facility) a challenge but still wish to be mobile.
  • Have difficulty with mobility, particular distance mobility.
  • Have difficulty or inability to walk and stand
  • Users with reduced strength in their legs
  • Long term Injury/illness/medical condition/disability which impacts on a person’s mobility, specifically their lower limb mobility.

Consideration for Selecting Mobility Scooters Products & Accessories

There are a number of considerations that apply:

Safe Working Load & User Height/Weight

Our range of scooters have different load capacities depending on the model; therefore it is important to always select a product with a safe working load at or above the maximum weight you expect it to carry. It is therefor vital to take into consideration the user’s height, weight, and the intended capcity the individual wishes to carry with them e.g. shopping.

Type/Model

A range of models of mobility scooters are available ranging for portable, mid-size, large luxury, 3 wheel, to specialised scooters. Models also vary in size, configuration, degree of portability, speed, range, turning circle, and comfort. It is therefore important to consider the user’s needs, height, and weight to ensure the most suitable option is selected, and to determine if a scooter is the right choice for the user.

Function & Primary Use

The user’s needs, goals, level of support required, physical characteristics and health, together with where and how they plan to use their scooter will help determine which scooter is suitable for the individual.

Other considerations relate to your specific needs and the environment in which the product will be used:

  • The environment and terrain the scooter will be used. Consider where the scooter will be used e.g. inside, outside, how far generally will be travelled on a daily basis, the surfaces and terrain it will be driven on e.g. uphill, slopes, uneven gravel etc, how long the trip will take. These considerations will impact on the size of scooter, the range, the speed, and the battery capacity.
  • Cognition- Does the person have any difficulty with their cognition or a diagnosis that may impact on their ability to safely operate the scooter (e.g. safely and correctly using the controls such as acceleration, steering, hazards, indicators etc), road and safety awareness (e.g. follow road and pedestrian rules), or difficulty with executive functions such as planning, processing, problem solving, insight, and memory?
  • Physical skills- Does the user have adequate upper limb, hand dexterity, and vision (near, distance, peripheral) to safely operate the controllers and navigate a mobility scooter within the community?
  • Will the scooter be used inside? Then measure the space in which the scooter will need to fit and assess the turns it will need to make. The physical size of the scooter and its turning circle will be key factors in choosing the correct model and type of scooter.
  • Will the scooter be primarily used for travelling from place to place outdoors? – a larger scooter will offer both greater stability and comfort, along with a great range and speed.
  • Transportation: Is there a need to get the scooter from place to place without actually riding it?  If yes, start with the portable scooter range.
  • Storage – Does the user have a secured, sheltered, and adequate space to safely store and charge the scooter, away from harsh weather conditions?
  • Does the person require any additional supports/accessories e.g. shade cover, walker holder, carry bag, phone holder etc?
