Patient handling products are manual or powered aids and devices which are designed to assist with safe and efficient patient transfers and patient handling e.g. moving a user from their bed to a chair etc.

These aids and devices are ideal for individuals who require assistance with their transfers and mobility and can make a significant difference in reducing the risk of injury, strain, and pain for the individual and their carer. These products can be used on a short-term basis (e.g. following surgery) or for long-term use (e.g. permanent condition).

Our range of patient handling aids and devices range from smaller manual and portable aids (e.g. swivel cushion, slide boards, walk/lift belts), medium support aids (e.g. manual or powered standing hoists and supports), to high support larger aids (e.g. powered hoists and slings).

Manual patient handling aids and manual hoists are suitable for individuals who have mild to moderate difficulty with their mobility and require some assistance and support to complete tasks such as standing and transferring. Manual aids and devices are ideal for users who do have some mobility, strength, and control to be able to assist with transfers e.g. able to weight bear on legs, able to swing their legs over objects, or able to use their upper body to assist/pull themselves up.

Powered hoist products are ideal for an individual who has moderate to significant difficulty independently standing, moving, or transferring due to reduced mobility and requires assistance (e.g. from carers) with these tasks.

We highly recommend trailing these aids and devices to ensure the correct option is selected to meet the user’s needs and be suitable for carers to operate safely. Below you will find some considerations to assist with making a decision on selecting the most appropriate product for the individual’s needs.

These products are suitable for those who:

  • Have difficulty or inability to walk and/or stand
  • Individuals who have difficulty moving
  • Users with reduced strength in their legs and/or arms
  • Individuals who have difficulty with transfers from one location to another e.g. moving from sitting to standing, from bed to chair, from chair to bathroom etc.
  • Those who are at high risk of falls
  • Individuals recovering as a part of a rehabilitation program following surgery/injury
  • Long term illness/condition which impacts on a person’s mobility

Consideration for Selecting Patient Handling Products & Accessories

There are a number of considerations that apply:

Safe Working Load & User's Weight

Our range of patient handling aids have different load capacities depending on the product; therefore it is important to always select a product with a safe working load at or above the maximum weight you expect it to carry. It is therefore vital to take into consideration the user’s height and weight.

Level of Support Required

Consider the level of support required to ensure the correct product is selected. Consider the user’s level of mobility, how much support they require, will carers be required to assist, what the user is having difficulty with.

Intended Use

Consider the purpose of the aid/device, how long it will be used for (e.g. long vs short term use), what type of transfers will the aid be used for, the user’s diagnosis and their prognosis (to ensure the product will continue to be suitable or adapatble to their changing needs).

Other considerations relate to your specific needs and the environment in which the product will be used:

  • Environmental- Consider if the equipment will fit the space it is to be used in, will the aid be used across multiple rooms/spaces, ensure that the equipment will fit through doorways, adequate space to operate and turn, where it will be stored, will the aid be compatible with the current equipment and furniture (e.g. fit/clearance under bed, wide enough to go around a chair).
  • Carer Use- Does the carer/family member using the equipment know how to correctly and safely use the equipment? Has education and training been provided on how to correctly and safely use, store, maintain the equipment?, Will multiple carers/ family members be operating the equipment?
  • Transportation- Will the aid need to be transported e.g. in a car? Will the aid need to be portable? Consider the weight of the product and if the carer can safely lift it into a vehicle for transporting.
  • Physical characteristics- Can the user assist with the transfer (e.g. upper body strength to pull self, lower body strength to weight bear), Does the user have positioning/posture needs?
  • Does the person require additional support/accessories to use with the aid e.g built in scale, sling, etc?
