Sleeping is a basic necessity that we often take for granted and getting a good night’s sleep is something we all need in order to function during the day.

When moving around in bed, getting in and out of bed, and bed comfort becomes a challenge, it may be time to explore options such as adjustable beds, alternative mattresses, and bed support aids. Adjustable beds have a range of features to assist when an individual has difficulty getting in and out of bed, moving around in bed, repositioning in bed, and for those who spend extended periods of time in bed. Adjustable beds are operated electrically by a handset which controls the bed height (lower and raise), backrest angle, knee break adjustment (leg raise), and bed tilt (Tendelenburg function).

At Emprise Mobility we stock a range of adjustable beds and mattresses to suit different user needs, comfort, and support levels. We have both standard hospital look adjustable beds, as well as adjustable beds with a more comtemporary look. Our range of mattresses range from foam to air mattresses, comfort to medical mattresses, and are available in a range of sizes.

In addition to beds and mattresses, we also stock companion beds to support partner sleeping arrangements, and a range of bed accessories which can assist with moving around, sitting up, repositioning self, bed safety, as well as getting in and out of bed.

These products are suitable for those who:

  • Individuals who have difficulty getting in and out of bed.
  • Ideal for those who have difficulty moving around in bed and repositioning themselves in bed.
  • Users who spend an extended period of time in bed due to illness/injury/medical condition.
  • Those who often find themselves sliding down the bed.
  • Individuals having difficulty with positioning themselves comfortably in bed.
  • Individuals who have specific positioning needs when sleeping e.g. users who require an upright sleeping position due to respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.
  • Individuals with reduced mobility, falls risk, and/or at risk of pressure injury development.

Consideration for Selecting Beds & Bedroom Products & Accessories

There are a number of considerations that apply:

Safe Working Load

Beds have a safe working load which varies depending on the model. It is important to consider the weight of the person plus the weight of the mattress and accessories to ensure it will be below the limit, to allow the bed to function optimally.

Bed Features

Consider what adjustments on the bed the individual requires e.g. hi/lo bed height adjustability, back raise/recline, knee break/leg raise, bed tilt, etc. Consider what difficulties the user is currently having with bed mobility e.g. getting in/out of bed, moving in bed, needing to sleep upright, to ensure the correct bed features are selected. It is also important to consider the users cognitive needs, if their condition/illness/disability needs will change over time, and if the equipment is required for short or long term.

Type of Mattress Required

We stock a range of comfort to medical mattresses, foam and air mattresses, and sizes predominantly being single and king single, with options of larger size mattresses available. It is important to consider what level of support and comfort the individual requires when selecting a suitable and compatible mattress. Consider if the individuals’s current bed/mattress is compatible with the new equipment or if these need to be replaced with a new bed and mattress system. The individual’s pressure risk level should also be considered; if you are concerned please discuss this with your health professional or the team at Emprise Mobility.

Other considerations relate to your specific needs and the environment in which the product will be used:

  • Clearance Space – different models of adjustable beds have different clearance levels underneath the bed frame which may influence whether equipment such as hoists can slide underneath.
  • Size of the bed – consider the size of bed required and the users needs such as movement in bed, safety, and the individual’s height. We generally stock single and king single beds, although some brands of beds we stock are available in sizes such as double, queen, split queen. It is also important to consider your bedroom set-up and if you have ample space to accomodate an adjustable bed.
  • Required Accessories – does the person require options such as bed rails, IV pole holders, alternative controls, self-help pole, headboard, and/or footboard?
  • Safety & Falls Risk – Is the user at risk of falls or falling out of bed? If so, do they require a floorline bed that can be lowered close to the floor to minimise fall related injury?. Does the user require additional bed accessories and positioning aids such as bed rails or a crash mat to support their safety?
  • Personal Style, Colour, & Fabric Options – Consider the individual’s needs and personal preference of style. Our range of beds include hospital style and contemporary beds, and feature a range of bed upholstery colours and fabric options to suit individual user style and functional needs.
  • Partner Set Up – Does the user require a bed that will accommodate their partner in a companion bed set-up? Consider the requirements of the individual’s partner (e.g. do they require a standard bed or adjustable bed?) and consider the bedroom size and accessibility.
  • Bedding- Does the individual require compatible pillows or sheet sets to support their comfort and bed mobility?
